Sex Positive Book Club: Ask, Building A Consent Culture

Sex Positive Book Club Hosted by: Tanille Geib

Tanille is thrilled to be continuing a Sex Positive Book Club at City Studio partnered with Island Sexual Health in Victoria, BC! This book club is meant for community to gather to celebrate human sexuality and learning through reading and discussion. We will be reading one book every couple of months and gathering to discuss and learn from each other.

Frisky Business at Island Sexual Health will be bringing in books so that we can purchase them at their location. Sometimes these books are tricky to find at regular book stores. We might even have a couple local authors join us along the way!

Ask, Building a Consent Culture edited by: Kitty Stryker

About the book: Have you ever heard the phrase “It’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission?” Violating consent isn’t limited to sexual relationships, and our discussions around consent shouldn’t be, either.

To resist rape culture, we need a consent culture—and one that is more than just reactionary. Left confined to intimate spaces, consent will atrophy as theory that is never put into practice. The multi-layered power disparities of today’s world require a response sensitive to a wide range of lived experiences.

In Ask, Kitty Stryker assembles a retinue of writers, journalists, and activists to examine how a cultural politic centered on consent can empower us outside the bedroom, whether it’s at the doctor’s office, interacting with law enforcement, or calling out financial abuse within radical communities.

More than a collection of essays, Ask is a testimony and guide on the role that negated consent plays in our lives, examining how we can take those first steps to reclaim it from institutionalized power.

We are honoured and humbled that this gathering is happening on L'kwungen Territory.

Sexuality Salon Convos: Myth Busters

Join Tanille Geib and Nick Sandor for a convo exploring the myths of sexuality and sex. This topic was inspired by the Sexual Frustrations workshop Tanille facilitated online in February and Nick Sandor's program Man Made at Island Sexual Health. What are we expecting of ourselves in performance, apperance, and connection within sexuality? This will be helpful to bust some myths that are floating around making us feel inadequate. Let's focus on some facts and welcome pleasure into our lives!

We are honoured and humbled that this gathering is happening on L'kwungen Territory.

We might not find all the answers, but together, I am sure we can have some deep breathes about being awesome and queer at the same time!
